A PAC for public transportationWHY SHOULD I CARE?The Michigan Public Transportation Action PAC is a voice for Michigan's public transportation industry in the halls of the Legislature. MPTA PAC is the most effective tool our industry has to support candidates who will fight for public transportation needs. Your financial support of the MPTA PAC gives all of us who care about the future of public transportation a strong influence in the political process.
The need for a PAC is realWHY SHOULD I SUPPORT IT?The public transportation industry survives on public funding. Without your support, our level of influence to promote adequate public funding is diminished. We must also fight negative public policy. Our industry is constantly under attack in the Michigan Legislature. Hardly a day goes by that some legislators aren't proposing legislation that would negatively impact some facet of our industry. Year in and year out there are legislators who make claims that public transit is neither efficient or effective. We know this isn't true, but we need to constantly communicate our message.
We've never had a PAC beforeWHY NOW?The Michigan Public Transit Association and others have full-time lobbyists on contract fighting for us in the Legislature every day. They have spent a great deal of time educating the men and women who decide our fate in Lansing. However, the Legislature is changing. Term limits today have made this task difficult and there are still new lawmakers who do not have a grasp of our issues or the impact their decisions have on our industry... and on you! Election law allows us to band together under an independent PAC. Our PAC allows an opportunity to find and fund candidates who believe in us: employees, riders, and our communities.
You don't have to go it alone. Several people in an agency or organization can band together and each commit to giving a small amount, with a goal for their agency. $100 is a reasonable goal for starters. Remember, though, all contributions must be made personally, not by an agency or business. And all dollars donated to the MPTA PAC must be accounted for, based on who gives.
If 100% of each transit agency, transit advocacy group and business partner each have just one person who is willing to commit to donating $100 per year, we will have a large enough PAC... and voice... to be an even more potent force for the public transportation industry across Michigan. |
lifetime goalsWHAT WILL MY DONATION DO?Each MPTA PAC contribution is counted toward a member's lifetime goal. Recognition will be awarded to those team members who achieve the following lifetime goals:
Friend of Transit: $500 - $999 Transit Advocate: $1000 - $4,999 Transit Champion: $5,000+ There is a small annual administrative expense associated with complying with state laws. 100% of remaining money raised will go to candidates who support transit and key elected officials deciding our industry's future.
